Cambuskenneth Abbey was founded in the 12th century by David 1. It was extended greatly in the 13th century, when the Bell tower was built. The Abbey became ruined in the mid 16th century but the tower survived and remains almost complete today, although renovations were undertaken in the 19th century. The Project recorded 497 marks of 86 different masons. From these marks it would appear that the tower had been built in at least 2 different phases, as marks on the 1st floor were different to the marks recorded on the ground floor. Also no marks were recorded on the 2nd floor, where most renovation work was undertaken in the 19th century.
