A church is thought to have stood on this site since the 11th century, although what type of church this was is unknown. By the 13th century a stone structure is thought to have  been given to the Priory of St Andrews. The precise date of the building of the existing tower is not known but thought to be possibly of 12th century date. It has been suggested that the same masons who worked on Durham Cathedral and Dunfermline Abbey may have also worked here but further work is required to follow this up. Nothing survives of the associated church, the present church being of a late 18th century date. A Project survey recorded 830 marks of 31 different masons. One of the masons, No 12, may have been the Master Mason, as one block appears to have building instructions cut on it as well as his mark.
