Brodick Castle incorporates parts of a castle of at least 13th century date, with later additions in the 16th and 17th centuries. Because of later additions built in the same style, it is difficult to distinguish some of the older parts from the new. During a recent building survey, undertaken by Addyman Archaeology, a small part of a drum tower of the 13th castle was found to survive, along with a long narrow arrow slit, around which were a number of masons' marks.
