The earliest parts of the existing church is the chancel and apse of late 12thcentury in dateIt is not known what the extent of the original nave was, but it is said to have been built about 1244, and underlay the present nave. The exterior of both the chancel & the apse are decorated with two tiers of blind arcades with typical Norman arches. Around the wallhead is a cornice of corbel heads, many of which have suffered severely from weather erosion. Repairs to the nave, chancel and apse were undertaken in 1698. An octagonal bell tower was added in the early 18th century and alterations to the nave were made in 1745 and again later in 1812. The nave was later demolished and a new nave built in 1856-58. The church was repaired and renovated in 2016-2018.

A survey of the masons' marks was undertaken in 2018 by the Project, when 600 marks of 52 different masons were recorded.
