Beldorney Castle was built in the mid 16th century; a substantial Z plan structure with a large circular tower on the southeast and a square tower at the northwest. The north wing was probably added in the 17th century with some remodelling of the interior. The southwest wing was added in the 18th century, with additions and repairs by A Marshall Mackenzie c 1890. It was later restored by Iain Begg between 1982-88. While undertaking a watching brief as part of a planning application Murray Archaeology Services noted a number of masons' marks on the doorway into the round tower on the ground floor, which they photographed and sent on the information to the Project. Five marks were recorded of two different masons. | | |
