The Preston Tower is said to be 15th century on which one mark, mason 1,  was recorded on the left side of the fireplace remains on the first floor. This mark was only found within this tower. The castle was extended in 1584. Six other masons 2,3,4,5 and 6 were noted to have worked on this later part of the castle. The initials of mastermason Thomas Leiper are carved on a skewput. 15 marks were recorded with 7 different masons.
